Background of the Study
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, with over 13 million people affected annually (World Health Organization, 2023). In Nigeria, stroke is increasingly recognized as a significant health burden, with a rising number of cases attributed to hypertension, diabetes, and other cardiovascular risk factors (Alabi et al., 2024). Stroke rehabilitation is a multifaceted process aimed at helping patients recover as much functionality as possible and reintegrating them into daily life. The rehabilitation process often includes physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and psychological support, among other interventions (Williams et al., 2024).
Nurses play a crucial role in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, both in acute settings and during the post-acute rehabilitation phase. Their role extends beyond basic nursing care to encompass monitoring, counseling, administering medications, facilitating therapy sessions, and providing emotional support to both patients and their families (Adeniran et al., 2023). Despite the central role of nurses, there is limited research on how their involvement specifically impacts stroke recovery in the Nigerian context, particularly in Taraba State, which has its own unique healthcare challenges (Umar et al., 2023).
This study seeks to examine the role of nurses in stroke rehabilitation and their impact on patient recovery in hospitals across Taraba State. By assessing the contributions of nurses in stroke care, the study aims to highlight best practices, identify gaps in care, and recommend strategies to improve stroke rehabilitation outcomes in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Stroke patients in Taraba State often face challenges related to timely diagnosis, access to quality rehabilitation services, and ongoing care due to a lack of resources, insufficient training of healthcare professionals, and poor healthcare infrastructure (Ene et al., 2024). While nurses are integral to stroke recovery, their specific contributions in rehabilitation settings are not well understood, and there is limited data on how nurses' involvement influences recovery outcomes. The lack of clear protocols, inadequate post-stroke care, and insufficient community-based rehabilitation programs further complicate recovery for stroke patients. Therefore, understanding the role of nurses in stroke rehabilitation is essential for improving patient care and recovery outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the role of nurses in stroke rehabilitation within hospitals in Taraba State. The research will assess both the clinical and emotional aspects of stroke care provided by nurses. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from nurses and the study's reliance on hospital-based settings, which may not represent the full range of rehabilitation practices in the community.
